The greater the public awareness about the practice and popularity of data mining, the louder the outcry for its regulation has grown. The following article elucidates why regulation in this context must be informed by user interest as opposed to the agendas of private corporations harvesting personal data for significant financial gain. Ethical boundaries around the omnipresence of indiscriminate data gathering, questions of informed consent and the authenticity of the data collected must be handled with ethical precision.
