Registered partnerships after same-sex marriage
A comparative study of Western European legal systems
As one of the last remaining countries in Western Europe to open up marriage to same-sex couples, Switzerland has the opportunity to look back on the approach taken elsewhere with regard to registered partnerships and other forms of union following the introduction of same-sex marriage. This article, based on a recent comparative law study undertaken by the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law, examines the experiences of 12 other European jurisdictions, and explores what role alternative forms of union continue to serve.
